The Gallery

The brand new Hirsel Gallery which showcases the very best craft makers in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders is now open at The Hirsel Craft Centre in Coldstream.
Set in the craft centre in the heart of the beautiful Hirsel country estate in Coldstream, the Hirsel Gallery specialises in original, handmade, contemporary craft work, and has a changing exhibition space to highlight selected artists. “Our emphasis is on high quality craftsmanship and individuality and to be honest we’re spoilt for choice round here”.
Glass engraver Julia Linstead and textile and jewellery designer Maggie Read are joining forces to curate this exciting new craft gallery. Julia said “We are both passionate about craft, the Homestead has a history of hosting big craft fairs and meet the maker events but this opportunity to build on that legacy and promote unique work in a dynamic and interactive way is just so exciting.”
Julia and Maggie also want to inspire people to get involved and have already run a competition at the Coldstream Primary School for the children to design a Hirsel postcard.  The cards are on sale in the Hirsel Gallery and profits will go back to the school. Julia said “There’s absolutely no reason why the next Damien Hirst or Rachel Whiteread shouldn’t come from Coldstream with a bit of encouragement.”
Visitors will not only find inspiration in the beautiful work for sale but Maggie and Julia also have a programme of craft classes run by various exhibiting artists which will roll out throughout the year. Maggie added “We also have a team of artists and artisans who will be assisting in the gallery with us, so at any time visitors will be able to learn exactly what processes are used for the work often direct from the makers themselves.”
